China Actually Spent a Billion Dollars to Build a Complete Austrian Village Copy
The phrase “there’s no place like home” takes on a whole new meaning when you’re talking about China’s replica of Hallstatt, the quaint Austrian village. You step outside and see a still lake, steep mountains rising behind it, and rows of buildings that look straight out of Austria. Then it hits you, you’re actually in China.
At first, you might think this is just another quirky development in China’s sprawling cities. But this is a lot more than that. China built a detailed replica, closely resembling Hallstatt, but with some modern adjustments and differences in design.
A Village, Rebuilt

Hallstatt, the original, is a gem with its cobblestone streets, picturesque church, and lakeside view. The village has long been a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting thousands of tourists every year. It’s one of those places that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. But what happens when you take all that history and charm and plop it down on the other side of the world? Apparently, you get Hallstatt 2.0.
In 2012, China unveiled its massive project in Huizhou, a city in Guangdong province. The replica goes as far as re-creating the landscape, the architecture, and even the lake. The entire thing was built for a staggering $940 million. For comparison, that’s enough money to fund the construction of several smaller residential developments or villages.
The Why Behind the Replica
So, why would anyone spend a billion dollars on something like this? The official explanation is simple: tourism and real estate. The town of Hallstatt has been a major tourist draw for years, so China’s real estate developers saw an opportunity to capitalize on the growing demand for European-style homes.
The area around the Hallstatt replica was designed as a luxury community, with waterfront properties and exclusive homes. The developers were clearly betting on the idea that there’s a market for wealthy individuals who crave that picturesque European lifestyle but don’t want the hassle of hopping on a plane.
The Hallstatt Controversy

Of course, not everyone was thrilled about the idea of China building a copy of an Austrian village. In fact, the village of Hallstatt itself was none too pleased when they first caught wind of the project. The people of Hallstatt were shocked by the development and initially saw it as cultural appropriation.
However, things took an interesting turn when the mayor of Hallstatt visited the Chinese replica in 2013 and recognized it as a meaningful homage to the village’s legacy. Over time, the two towns developed a relationship, with Hallstatt even sharing some of its cultural heritage with the new village.
