Most beaches around the world are made of either sand or rock. But through coincidences or environmentally irresponsible actions, some are now made of glass. And though we might not love how these beaches came to be, there's no denying the appeal of their uniqueness.
If you want to see the best example of a sea glass beach, head to Fort Bragg, California. You'll find Glass Beach right next to MacKerricher State Park. For almost 20 years in the mid-20th century, this once pristine spot was used as a dumpster for different materials, including — you guessed it — glass.
While things like scrap metal and batteries were eventually picked up and properly disposed of, the sea took care of the glass, slowly smoothing it into small, shiny pebbles. This protected area now welcomes curious visitors who wish to see this phenomenon.
And on the rare chance that you find Glass Beach too crowded, don't worry. Two other former dumping sites nearby also have this unusual "sand."
