Reached by a wooden bridge over a mosaic garden, Bed & Breakfast Drijfpaleis is as eccentric as it is sumptuous. Founded in 2006, after a five-year labor of love, the floating palace is an explosion of color and creativity, drawing on the exoticism of Italian design for its inspiration.
The four rooms – Naples, Florence, Sicily and Venice – are dripping in charming chintz. Sistine-style murals, window shutters and stained glass create a pastiche of all things Italian, and are augmented by vibrant wallpapers, drapes, chandeliers and vintage rugs. Here, more is definitely more – and it works.
The Sicily room – where your bed is the Siracusa, a converted wooden boat – is the most wacky. Venice, with its double bed suspended from the ceiling and draped in red curtains and lace, is tops for romance.
